Steady as a rock

…or so they say

Get some color in your code!

Pygments is probably the coolest syntax highlighter since sliced bread Smile

The new paste.ubuntu-nl.org is powered by django, pygments and a hashcash based anti-spam technique. Now finally all of ubuntu-nl.org is migrated and I can start making the code publish-able.

More django goodness

Powered by Django.

If you didn’t know it yet: django rocks. Very, very much Smile

Right now, almost all of ubuntu-nl.org is django-powered, even the forum (punbb) and planet templates (and planet config!) are generated by django for maximum style consistency. It took a while to perfect^Wfix all the bugs, and an SQL view (Yay, MySQL 5!) for integration of forum data and django data, but the dutch Ubuntu website is now better than ever.

For more python goodness:

  • Planet is also python
  • It’s all managed in bzr , which is written in python
  • The code will be published on launchpad, which is also written in python
  • Python also rocked for the migration scripts Knipoog

Ubuntu Security Notices

During the move of ubuntu-nl.org to django, the RSS feed for Ubuntu Security Notices was destroyed without notice. My apologies for that. If you used it, please point your feed reader to http://media.ubuntu-nl.org/rss/usn.xml

Maybe I should add it to planet Ubuntu… Comments anyone?

Living on the bleeding proprietary edge

While testing the things I wrote for Usplash in edgy, I often had to hard reboot my mahine because the ☠ Proprietary ati driver kept crashing the machine on modeswitches. Fortunately they released an update recently which is supposed to fix that.

So instead of packaging it weirdly, as I did for breezy/dapper, I decided to bite the bullet and update the ati and nvidia drivers in linux-restricted-modules. A dpkg-buildpackage and reboot later, with a lot of finger crossing, it worked! I haven’t seen a single crash yet with these drivers.

Now, if only they’d support composite… But hey, it’s a proprietary driver, apparently that’s synonymous for ‘hard to work with’. Anyway, back to implementing more usplash goodies, and maybe even fix a bug or two.

Windows update fun

I sometimes need to work on Windows machines, much to my dismay. Today I found out that in the windows automatic updates, windows decided to install a helper application for removing malicious software.

Fortunately, we also have a proper solution to remove all malicious software from a PC Smile

Ubuntu will stay on Freenode

A while ago Debian chose to “move” to OFTC instead of Freenode (currently there are 600+ people in #debian on freenode and 313 on OFTC, so maybe 100 people moved) which prompted some people to propose the same for Ubuntu. Fortunately, yesterday the community council decided that Ubuntu will stay on Freenode, saving us all the trouble of trying to move 1000+ people Smile

The decision was made exactly three months after Rob Levins fatal accident. In the past three months the Freenode staff has shown that they are coping well, but I still miss the conversations I had with him. Next Saturday would have been his 51st birthday, I’ll light a candle for you, mate!
