GNUbuntu? No, gNewSense!
For the christians out there, people have crated Ichtux and Ubuntu christian edition. But what if you believe in St. IGNUcius and the church of Emacs? Fear not, for now there is a new Ubuntu derivative: gNewSense, an attempt at a pure free software distribution without any binary-only drivers, firmware or software. Their work so far was only downloadable via BitTorrent, but some generous people helped in getting .iso images directly downloadable so people who bought hardware that runs with only free software can try it more easily.
Shockingly, even emacs is installed by default on it
Hi, I am a christian so this is of interest to me. BUT my major issue is parent filtering, mainlyfor all the porn out there! I was looking up farm equipment and one of the sites was farm hoes…….. guess what? yeah …. well, I have Xandros and was told there is not a filtering system for it. I have Ubuntu, but have not loaded it up. If there is a filtering system on ANY Linux OS’s I will get it somehow and get the filter. If there is a free download or a low cost one out there that you know of I would greatly appreciate your input. WOuld you mind emailing me direct please? I really appreciate any help and I really like Linux, I just need to know how to work it like I know how to work Windows!
Thank you, Kris Martinez
You could try willow as content filtering proxy. Herman Bos (another Ubuntu member) has blogged about it at http://dev.osso.nl/herman/blog/2005/12/08/willow-content-filtering-proxy/
Kristina, though I find the act of censoring vile, and it will only cause your kids to find other ways of doing what you want to stop them from doing. There will be many proxy programs available that can do what you want. You might find them hard to configure though, if you do, you could always offer a few dollars to someone if they can help you set it up.
Of course no program is going to be able to always stop people finding porn or anything else you want to block. There are _always_ ways around this type of thing.
I’m glad though that you’re coming over to GNU/Linux as Free software is much more inline with Christ’s teachings of sharing and treating others as you would like to be treated.
Josh: filtering is not just censoring, it is also about protection. As you see from her post, porn pops up everywhere, even on harmless looking sites.
